The Baltimore VA Medical Center is a 727-bed acute medical and surgical care facility serving veterans from all over Maryland. There are 787 nurses on staff. In 2006, this facility was voted one of the top ten places to work in Baltimore. In one recent year, nearly 600,000 outpatient visits occurred at the Medical Center. The hospital admitted 8,943 patients to the Center, and 27,300 veterans visited the emergency room.
Specialty services include Geriatric Evaluation and Management Program, Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC), Home-Based Primary Care Program, Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC), Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence, Outpatient Spinal Cord Injury Program, Refractory Congestive Heart Failure Program, Regional Neurosurgery Program, Women Veterans Evaluation and Treatment Program.
The Baltimore VA Medical Center is affiliated with the next-door University of Maryland Medical Center; the two facilities are connected by a walkway. The Medical Center offers veterans state of the art medical technology, clinical services and extensive research programs. With one of the largest funded research and development programs in the VA system, the Center is able to undertake studies in diabetes, immunology, oncology, virology, cellular biology and infectious diseases, resulting in cutting-edge treatment for patients.
The Medical Center supports three Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Fort Howard, Glen Burnie and Loch Raven.
