University of Maryland Medical Center is a 705-bed teaching hospital offering comprehensive care for West Baltimore and tertiary care for all of Maryland and the East Coast. There are more than 6,800 employees on staff, including 1065 attending physicians. In one recent year, 154,834 patients were given outpatient care at the hospital, 64,960 patients were treated in the emergency room and 35,982 patients were admitted. The hospital had 1,577 babies delivered there.

The University of Maryland Medical Center is a national and regional referral center for Trauma, Cancer Care, Neurocare, Women's and Children's Health and Organ Transplants. The New Weinberg Center building opened in 2006, including a 29-bed Intensive Care Unit, a 30-bed Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit and a 32-bed Surgical Acute Care Unit.

The Medical Center is part of the University of Maryland medical system, a private, non-profit network of hospitals and outpatient care sites located throughout the state of Maryland.
